| Cape May Stage Rewrites History in “Chronicles of Cape May” on June 29th at 8PM A 400th Anniversary Production with Local Celebrities |
|
| Opens June 29, 2009 One Night Only! Cape May, NJ June 17, 2009 - On Monday, June 29 at 8PM the "Chronicles of Cape May As Related By Jackson D'Catur, AKA The Old Fogey" promises to be the silliest show of Cape May Stage’s 21st season. In celebration of the city’s 400th anniversary, Cape May Stage is presenting a whirlwind Python-esque premiere that combines local luminaries, some favorite comic actors from the community, and a sprinkling of acting interns from Highpoint University in North Carolina. The show is penned by David Gray though it is anyone's guess what will actually be said. Donald Toal, the Stage’s resident Stage Manager and Outreach Coordinator, starts the evening with some actual historical facts, but is soon driven to distraction by Jackson D'Catur in a tour-de-force performance by Parker Smith. Lenape Indians are played by Shirley Stiles and Nathan Ruffin in costumes designed with wild abandon by Vickie Tryon. Bryon McHenry does a hilarious Ernie Hemingway as well as the English Governor. Monty LoSasso (who has been working backstage on "Souvenir") gets to shine as local hero Col. Henry Sawyer and an English Worthy. In a featured cameo, Al Beale will bring the house down, and Susan Tischler as an Indian in the future is absolutely brilliant. Marie Ventrone plays a surprising Captain Kidd and joins Susan Tischler for the ending of the evening. The antics are directed by Roy Steinberg with assistance from Donald Toal. The Cape May Stage interns have been laboring for weeks finding props and building special effects. Be prepared to laugh until you hurt. This production is part of the Second Stage Series sponsored by Dave and Chris Clemans. Tickets are $15 and the performance begins at 8 pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse at Bank and Lafayette Streets. Doors open at 7:30! Reserve now! Production Team Production team includes Roy Steinberg (Director), Donald Toal (Assistant Director), Vickie Tryon (Costumes) For more information (click here) Box office at (609) 884-1341. The box office is open Monday through Sunday from 10AM 5PM. Assisted Listening devices are also available upon request. |

| Two award winning local women artists team up to offer the community a unique look at nature inspired art. "Wings" - photographs by Tina Giaimo of Cape May and hand tinted block prints by Janet Payne of West Cape May is on display at the Nature Center of Cape May at 1610 Delaware Ave through July. A meet the artists reception is scheduled for June 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm as part of the kick off of this year's Harbor Fest. Giaimo has traveled near and far to capture her images of birds in their natural habitat. Included in her display is the rare Anna's Hummingbird with it's bright fushia throat. "My love affair with photography started at an early age. I was about seven when I got my first camera, a Kodak Brownie, which I still have today," says Giaimo. Giaimo is the owner of Spirit Catcher Photography in Carpenter's Square Mall. She enjoys photographing with her husband Don Merwin. Their love of nature, wildlife and Cape May shine through in all the photographs they take. She is seldom seen without her camera. Payne's playful use of color adds a unique quality to her intricately carved block prints. " It is very peaceful to carve. What you carve away on the block is just as important as what you leave behind," Payne says of her work. "The hand tinting with pastels really makes each piece unique," adds Payne. Among her subjects are blue herons, purple egrets and colorful fish of the Atlantic Ocean. Payne enjoys working in her studio, teaching art and volunteering at Cape May City Elementary School. Both artists will be on hand Friday, June 19th to discuss their art techniques and offer tips to budding artists. All artwork is for sale. Light refreshments will be served. Following the reception there will be a Summer Solstice Bonfire at the Nature Center with entertainment by Carl Behrens. Please call 898-8848 for more information.
