Edition 5, Volume 1
September 1, 2006
Today's Date:
Welcome to our Newsletter...

Ah, September!  The children have returned to school, and the beaches have a lot more room! After all, summer sticks around until September 21st, and the first couple of weeks of September are often some of the best beach time of all – for those who’ve stayed around to discover what September at the shore is all about.

People may invent calendars and clocks and say that the “summer” lasts from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but Mother Nature doesn’t throw a switch and declare: “O.K., you can’t go on the beach now!” The lifeguards may be gone, but some of the most glorious beach days are September days.

Just as summer keeps going, so does your Great Vacation newsletter. If you’ve been reading our town calendars, you already know that September is literally packed with places to go and things to do, and you’ll discover even more in this issue.

There’s a whole lot happening this fall. In fact, Elton John and the Rolling Stones are coming in October, but you’ll learn more about that later on. (see our Atlantic City feature for dates) There are some really big events during September in the areas we cover – The Irish Festival and the Custom Car Show are just two of them – so you’ve got a lot to check out and enjoy this month.

In fact, there are so many special things to do that you’ll want to read the calendars carefully so you’ll be able to plan where you want to go and what you want to see in advance.

You’ll find a feature on our next “boardwalk down the shore” in this issue, only in this case it’s not made of boards, and it’s in Sea Isle City. We’re also spotlighting The Doctor’s Inn in Cape May Court House in a feature, as well. You’ll also find a story on the Irish festival in North Wildwood. (We’re all Irish – even if it’s only one day a year!)
|

You’ll see a host of places to stay and dine in this issue, too, plus places to shop and area attractions to visit with your family and friends.

Thanks again to all those who have shared comments with us. We really do appreciate and value what you think, and the more you tell us, the better we’ll be able to serve you, your family, friends and neighbors. You can go on our blog and tell us what you think – both good and not so good – and we also, as always, ask you to tell everybody about the Great Vacation newsletter, or simply email it to everyone you know.

As we approach the fall season, Great Vacation newsletter will be here to keep you informed, and we’ll be adding more things for you to see and do as we move ahead. Thanks again for your support, and have a fantastic September, 2006!

                                                           Sincerely,

The Artist’s Corner

The Millville Renaissance

This time we move inland to the city of Millville, New Jersey, well-known for its history of glass making, Wheaton Village, and friendly atmosphere. We travel to High Street and what is an amazing experience called the “3rd Friday” of each month – a night of music, food, and happy crowds of people roaming from one art gallery and shop to another.

At the invitation of Marie Natale, one of our favorite featured artists in Great Vacation magazines, on our website, and here in our Great Vacation newsletter, friends joined us to go along and meet artist Isabelle Samul at Isabelle’s Studio at 135, a gallery presently featuring the work of twelve artists, including the art of Marie Natale during September.

Ms. Samul comes from a family of artists and crafts people who have worked in the arts for many years, and her ties to the New York and northern New Jersey area are evident in her work. Initially armed with a degree in Psychology and Sociology, she worked first as a social worker for a number of years before her desire to pursue her artistic talents full time moved her to attend Parsons School of Design in New York, study with Wanda Kline in Ocean City, and come to Millville to study with Pat Witt, the matriarch of the Millville art community at the Barn Studio of Art, and the subject of an upcoming issue  of Artist’s Corner.

Isabelle Samul’s work is primarily in oil on canvas, and her choice of subjects is eclectic, ranging from figures to landscapes and portraits, and her style is extremely colorful leaning to the abstract in some examples, with an impressionistic look in others. Her use of strong colors creates a vivid effect in some of her subjects, yet there is a subtlety in other paintings that appeals to a softer impression overall.

Isabelle refers to her place as a working studio where artists interact, learn from each other, and display their work for the public. It’s a great way to showcase the artistic talents of many, including her own, for the general public.

Isabelle Studio at 135 on High Street in Millville is open Tuesday through Saturday from

11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sundays by appointment only, and closed on Mondays. For more information call 856-293-1990.

For Your Information...

The Promenade in Sea Isle City

The delightful town known as Sea Isle City does not have a boardwalk like Atlantic City and Ocean City, but it has something just as good – although it’s not made of boards. It’s called the Promenade, and you’ll learn what it is in just a moment, but first a little history.

Before Europeans came to the New World, the Leni Lenape native tribes (long before Columbus landed) would come from the mainland to the island in search of fish and shells. Then, in 1692 Joseph Ludlum purchased the strip of land that became Ludlam’s Island, and the beach area, called Ludlam’s Beach, and the island remained virtually uninhabited for almost 200 years until a man named Charles K. Landis came along. Mr. Landis, one of the founders of Vineland, New Jersey, purchased the island in 1880.

Landis had traveled to Venice, Italy and fallen in love with the canals of the ancient city. He dreamed of re-creating a town like Venice with its waterways. Two years later in 1882 Sea Island City became a borough in Cape May County, New Jersey. Houses, schools and hotels were established, and the island was eventually connected to the mainland by a road and the railroad.

Charles Landis did his best to construct a town with a European atmosphere, and the five miles of beaches surrounded by water make Sea Isle City a very attractive place for residents and seasonal tourists. One of the primary features in Sea Isle is the Promenade, a wide paved area that runs along the beach from 29th to 57th Street. Strollers discover that the Promenade is lined with wonderful shops, restaurants, family arcades and more – and that it’s also an ideal place for bicyclists and in-line skaters. The smooth surface beckons to those who like to ride a bike or skate, and Sea Isle City and its unique walkway are just 20 miles below Atlantic City’s famous boardwalk – within driving distance of all the attractions at the shore.

Perhaps one goal for visitors might be to walk all the boardwalks in the Great Vacation coverage area – a lot of walking, indeed – beginning with the oldest and most famous, Atlantic City’s boardwalk, continuing on to the Ocean City boardwalk, and then onto Sea Isle City’s Promenade. However, there are other boardwalks yet to be described in this space in future issues, so we urge you to wait until you read what you’ll see here. For now, be sure to enjoy Sea Isle City’s Promenade – and make Mr. Landis, and your friends and family, happy!

If you’d like to know more about Sea Isle City and the Promenade call 609-263-8687, or go online to www.seaislecity.org

It has been said, no doubt far too many times, that whiskey was invented so that the Irish wouldn’t rule the world. However, if you travel to Ireland you’ll discover a very healthy economy, a people tremendously proud of their heritage, and some of the friendliest folk in the world.

A good book on Ireland says that almost half the people in the U.S. (47 percent) can trace their heritage back to the Irish, in whole or in part, and we know for a fact that on St. Patrick’s Day each year nearly everyone is Irish – or claims to be – and that’s also true of the people who attend one of the biggest Irish festivals of all in North Wildwood, New Jersey this month.

It’s the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) 15th Annual Irish Fall Festival Thursday, September 21 through Sunday,
September 24th, 2006 in North Wildwood, and this year’s event is going to be absolutely HUGE!  The fun begins
September 21st with the annual golf tournament.

You’ll find music and more music, comedy, entertainment, food, brew, spirits, dancing, street markets, parades and fun everywhere you look. The event coincides with the incredible classic car show, with about 2,000 classic cars on display on the same weekend, but we’ll talk more about that in our next issue.

Back to the Irish… Enjoy Paddy’s Well, Celtic Cross from New York City, Scythian “The Celtic Misfits” from Washington, D.C., The Bogside Rogues from Northeast Philly, 2U (the U2 “tribute band”), The Barley Boys, The Malarkey Brothers, The Highland Rovers, The Andy Cooney Band, Reilly Raiders, comedy by Grover Silcox and Joey Callahan, and a whole lot more!

This is one of the biggest Irish festivals in the country, with all sorts of vendors and Irish crafts, pubs and taverns offering special Irish entertainment all weekend long, traditional and modern Irish music, traditional dancing, pipe bands and more.

The proceeds raised from the event benefit many AOH charities, so all the fun serves good causes, as well. Bus service is available for Irish Fall Festival visitors during the event, so you can park and ride.

For more details telephone toll-free: 1-800-IRISH-91 (1-800-474-7491), or go to www.cmcoah.com When you go online, click on the festival brochure to check out the other events that will be held during the festival. A traditional Mass will be given at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, the 24th, at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic church, Glenwood and Atlantic Avenues.
