Edition 4, Volume 1
August 15, 2006
Today's Date:
Welcome to our Newsletter...

The summer season slips away, but Great Vacation newsletter has lots more for you to do, and we again thank those who have responded to our newsletter so far. Your comments are truly appreciated, so keep them coming, and please tell your friends about the newsletter, or email it to them.

We have many, many more new places to stay and dine in this issue, as well as new attractions, town event calendars, a feature on the next boardwalk , as they say, “…down the shore.” (Ocean City’s boardwalk), some places to shop, a new feature on real estate, upcoming Atlantic City concerts, the Artist’s Corner, our featured business (Oma’s Doll Shop in Cape May), and still more.

Our archive of places to go and things to do in our past issues provides you, your friends and neighbors with even more information, and our blog is the place where you can share your thoughts about what you’ve seen and done, as well as what you liked, and whatever didn’t measure up to your expectations. The more you “talk” to us, the better we can serve you and others.

We’ve again included the Atlantic City casino box office telephone numbers, and you might want to print them out for future quick-contact reference.

Remember, we’re not named Great Vacation by accident. For over a decade we’ve been helping people discover the best places to stay, dine, and have fun, and this newsletter helps us keep the new in what we do. In fact, as much as we try to know everything about southern New Jersey, we still miss things from time to time. That’s where you come in. If you had a great time and you would like to tell others, put it in the blog. Your good times can make very interesting reading for all of us, but we’ll protect your identity. That’s a promise!

As always, our goal is to present the information you need for a great day trip, a great weekend, or a great season at the shore, and we’re here twelve months a year. That means that during the fall, winter and spring you’ll discover great things to do in southern New Jersey right here in the Great Vacation newsletter. It’s our promise to you.

We'll be adding more and more as time goes by because it's our intention to help your intention of having a
GREAT VACATION (or getaway) every time you head...down the shore!

                                                           Sincerely,

Oma's Doll Shop

In German, the word “Oma” means “grandmother,” and when you step through the doors at Oma’s Doll Shop, 315 Ocean Street, # 5, Washington Commons in Historic Cape May, New Jersey, you’re greeted with the sight of over a thousand dolls under one roof, arrayed in all their splendor and finery. Oma’s Doll Shop has dolls for every age group, clothes and accessories, doll houses and furniture, and they specialize in collectable and playable dolls (and there is definitely a difference between the two.)

A “playable” doll is just that – a doll a child can play with. They’re designed for the rough and tumble play that children engage in, and they, dare we say, are built of hardier materials to stand up to the bangs and booms that come with play.

Collectable dolls, on the other hand, are more fragile. They’re designed for display, and Oma’s knowledgeable sales people can explain why porcelain dolls, and other specially crafted dolls, require more tender loving care, and explain the real art and work that go into their creation.

Established in 1988, Oma’s Doll Shop is also home to an extraordinary childhood experience: the “adoption” center. A world apart within this marvelous store, the adoption center is a special place where a child can choose the perfect “newborn” doll while dressed in appropriate “hospital” garb, with the help of the “nurse” who will aid them in their selection. The “nurse” will help them pick just the right outfit in which to take the “baby” home, and supply the appropriate “certificate” and related instruction to go with it. The experience is made complete in every way, and children delight in their choices and all that goes with them.

Oma’s Doll Shop is home to many of the finest “names” in the doll world: Lee Middleton, American Girl, Alexander Doll Company, Precious Moments, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Huggums, Etc., Only Hearts Club Dolls, Toy Presidents, and more.

They’re open year round seven days a week If you’d like more information call Oma’s Doll Shop
toll-free at 1-877-274-DOLL, or email them at omasdollshop@horizon.net

You"ll find dolls in many places, but there's no place quite like Oma's Doll Shop in Historic Cape May. It's an experience like no other for young and old alike.

The Artist’s Corner

Victorian Walk Gallery

There are many American artists who have captured the hearts of all of us, but few have caught our imagination the way Thomas Kinkade, The Painter of Light, ™ has with his paintings of the American scene, from cottages to quiet American streets where the lights beckon us to the warmth of hearth and home.

That’s why you’ll want to visit Victorian Walk Gallery, on the second floor, at 421 Washington Street, Cape May, N.J. to fully enjoy the Cape May collection painted by this gifted painter. You’ll see “Cape May Light,” “Jackson Street, Cape May.” “Cape May Pride,” “Cape May Christmas,” and “Victorian Autumn” as well as so many other wonderful paintings by Thomas Kinkade.

Victorian Walk Gallery is open during the summer months from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. seven days a week for visitors strolling the Washington Mall and downtown area of Historic Cape May. After Christmas and up until May, they’re open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 5.

It’s hard to believe that there might be someone in America who hasn’t become familiar with the paintings of Thomas Kinkade, but if you’re that rare person who may not have seen his work, a trip to Victorian Walk Gallery will accomplish two things:  Allow you to see the range of his work and his extraordinary images of the American scene, and provide the opportunity for you to see the five paintings in his Cape May collection. There is almost certainly a Thomas Kinkade painting that’s perfect for your home.

“In Hometown Pride, I’m trying to evoke the very essence of the American dream – the peace, the precious freedoms that continue to be our birthright.

Old Glory flies over the scene, reflecting the glorious light of sunset in its red, white and blue. That beautiful sentinel, a standard that has proudly waved for centuries, promises, and indeed provides, that most revered hallmark of the American way of life: united we stand.”

The Ocean City Boardwalk...A Little Bit of History

In our last issue we wrote about the Atlantic City Boardwalk.  In this issue we leave Atlantic City, go south through Margate and Longport, cross the bay and come to Ocean City, New Jersey, “America’s Greatest Family Resort.”

While giant casino hotels and other attractions line the AC boardwalk, the boardwalk in Ocean City is different in appearance, width, length and the shops and attractions that line the boards. Most of the shops along the O.C. boardwalk are one and two stories high, with the highest structures being amusement attractions. The highest thing in sight is the giant Ferris wheel.

The first boardwalk in Ocean City was built around 1890, running through the intersection of 9th Street and Ocean. After this first attempt the community wanted to get closer to the ocean, and the boardwalk was rebuilt several times over the years. The last major reconstruction followed a disastrous fire that destroyed a portion of the boardwalk and a number of businesses in 1927.

Following the fire, the city moved the boardwalk 300 feet closer to the water in 1928, and businesses moved along the boards. The 1928 boardwalk was built on cement pilings, and maintenance down to the present day usually involves redecking from time to time as the weather, years and foot traffic take their toll.

In the 1920s many movie/stage show theaters lined the Ocean City boardwalk. Shriver’s Saltwater Taffy and other retail establishments took up occupancy to serve the crowds of summer visitors. Today’s boardwalk covers 2½  miles of the eight-mile-long Ocean City beach, and strollers pass amusement rides, miniature golf, restaurants and food courts, all sorts of shops offering beach wear, tee-shirts, hats, knickknacks, and retail goods running from A to Z. The Music Pier offers entertainment, you can go to the movies, or simply sit on a bench and people watch.

The Ocean City boardwalk is a place where people gather from all over, and many folks drive here for the express purpose of walking the boards with family and friends. As the years have passed the beach has narrowed, and some city officials and residents wish that the boardwalk had been built a bit further inland, but they do their best in maintaining the beach’s width.
When you join the parade on a summer’s evening on the Ocean City boardwalk, you’re participating in an experience that has been going on for over a hundred years, and the sights, sounds, delicious smells, and the crash of the surf all blend into just one more reason why Ocean City, New Jersey is known as “America’s Greatest Family Resort.”
