Welcome to our Newsletter...
Happy Holidays

Ho! Ho! Ho! Happy Holidays! December is half gone and our next issue begins a brand new year. 2007! It’s hard to believe. This is our 12th issue of the Great Vacation newsletter, and we invite you to send it to a friend (or, all the people you know if you want to – the more the merrier!) because it’s FREE, and it doesn’t cost them anything at all.

The nice thing about Great Vacation newsletter is that it’s filled with useful information all year long, and your friends may discover the ideal place to stay at the shore, wonderful restaurants, great places to shop, the entertainment line-up in Atlantic City, special events, attractions and much more.

Check out the photo galleries on the main website, and continue to send us copies of your favorite shore photos. You’ll also see some holiday recipes in this issue. Our favorite is the “Stress” recipe.

Discover boardwalks and beaches, lighthouses and parks, museums and galleries, and enjoy the Artist’s Corner with a different artist featured in each issue. There are places for families, places for friends, and places just for you and that special person in your life.

As we wind up the year of 2006 we thank you for your readership and support, and we take a moment to say Happy New Year, too. 2006 has been quite a year, and we sincerely hope that 2007 will be a wonderful year for you and the important people in your life.

Remember, the Great Vacation newsletter is FREE, so it makes a nice gift for all those special folks you know. Email it to them with a note saying, “Check this out! It’s a great way to begin 2007 with places to go, fantastic restaurants and clubs, and things to see and do, and it will help you find out a whole lot more about where you can take your next GREAT VACATION!”

                                                                                     Sincerely,

Pictures…We Get Pictures
Actually, we’ve GOT pictures on our main website: just click here and you’re invited to check them out. Go to the homepage and click on “Photo Galleries.” When it opens, select a set of pictures by town and see if your favorite photos match up to some of ours. In fact, we’d love to share your favorite photos from “…down the shore.” Check out the details in this issue. Eventually we’ll have as many shore “shots” as possible so when the leaves fall, the cool winds blow, and thoughts turn to spring and summer while we push up our thermostats and dream of warm, balmy days again, we can then go to www.GreatVacationGuide.com and do a little dreaming ourselves.

Photo Contest

Christmas Cookie Recipe

1 cup of water •1 tsp baking soda • 1 cup of sugar • 1 tsp salt • 1 cup of brown sugar
2 tsp lemon juice • 4 large eggs • 1 cup nuts • 2 cups of dried fruit • 1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequila

Sample the Cuervo to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Cuervo
again, to be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup
and drink.

Turn on the electric mixer... Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add one teaspoon of sugar... Beat again. At this point it's best to make
sure the Cuervo is still OK, try another cup ... just in case. Turn
off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the
cup of dried fruit, Pick the frigging fruit off floor... Mix  on the turner.
If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose
with a drewscriver. Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.

Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Who giveshz a sheet. Check the
Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table.
Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.

Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over.
Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the
window, finish the Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the
dishwasher.

Happy Holidays!

The Community Notebook

If you haven’t seen the current holiday production at Cape May Stage this month, here’s your opportunity to enjoy a beloved holiday story and save on the regular ticket price. On Sunday afternoon, December 17th, patrons attending “This Wonderful Life,” the highly acclaimed stage adaptation starring Cape May Stage’s Artistic Director, Michael Carleton, are eligible for a special discount on their tickets. Theatergoers donating canned goods at the box office will receive a ticket discount of $1 off per can (5-can maximum).  All canned goods will go to the Cape May Food Closet.

Is there anyone in the history of Cape May, with the exception of Capitan Mey himself, more well-known around town than Shirley Stiles? On December 21st, she makes her 2006 debut at Cape May Stage. Shirley will play the role of Ma Bailey in Cape May Stage’s holiday production of “This Wonderful Life”. That’s Thursday evening, December 21st at Cape May Stage at the corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets in downtown Cape May. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for seniors and $8 for students and children. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the curtain rises at 8 o‘clock. Stiles makes her first entrance at 8:20, so come out to the theatre and support Cape May’s first lady, Ms. Shirley Stiles. It’s a Christmas present you can and share with your friends.

This Newsletter's Featured Businesses

Coldwell Banker, Sol Needles Real Estate, Inc.

The year was 1901. Sol Needles set up his real estate office in Cape May, New Jersey, and he was virtually a one-man operation until his daughter Catherine (Kate) joined him. She took over the business in 1922 and operated it for nearly 40 years with family help until her son Wister (Barney) Dougherty took over the company in 1963.

The company expanded and salespeople were added to the staff. Barney was joined by his daughter Lynn-Dougherty-Gleeson in 1976, along with Bill Bezaire, and the pair became co-managers of the operation and then purchased the company in 2000.

During this period they chose to join with Coldwell Banker in 1987, and in 2003 and 2004 respectively, the company was recognized as the Number One Coldwell Banker office in per-salesperson sales in the Northeast Region (covering 12 states), no small accomplishment for this outstanding family owned and operated business now in its fourth generation.

It is unusual for a company to last for over 100 years, but what was begun by Sol Needles was added to by his children and grandchildren and their hard work over the years. Today their reputation for dedication to serving their customers is second-to-none. When it come to residential and commercial real estate sales and service, Coldwell Banker, Sol Needles Real Estate, Inc. goes to the head of the class for many reasons, but the first is a family tradition dating back to the beginning of the last century. In this case practice does make perfect. One hundred and five years is a long time to do anything, and doing it right for that long is a testimony of excellence from an extraordinary family.

Coldwell Banker, Sol Needles Real Estate, Inc. is located at 512 Washington Street Mall in Cape May, New Jersey. For all your residential and commercial real estate needs (click here)

Bella Vida Garden Café

“Bella Vida” means “beautiful life,” and that is the wish for each person who walks through the door at the Bella Vida Garden Café, 406 North Broadway, West Cape May, New Jersey.

Open seven days a week, the day begins at Bella Vida Garden Café with breakfast, of course, and you would expect specialty egg dishes and omelets, and you would be right. Breakfast is served beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasts until 2:30 p.m. because some folks just might want to have their breakfast as late as possible. The “Best Breakfast Deal in Town!” features 2 eggs, 2 flapjacks and 2 strips of bacon for (you might have guessed it) just $2.22 from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.

Lunch, on the other hand, begins at 11:30 a.m. and lasts until 3:00 p.m., and you won’t mind if lunch overlaps breakfast, not when you see their made-to-order salads and their deli sandwiches.

If you thought the day was done following lunchtime, this time of year you can enjoy what they call the “Bird Early” dinner from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays with Bella Vida’s FREE salad bar and FREE dessert, all for just $12.95 per person. Ask about their homemade pie…Oh My! Dinner, by the way, lasts until 9:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Oh, Bella Vida also has specialty coffees including cappuccino, espresso and lattes, too!

Bella Vida Garden Café offers private parties, party trays, a take out menu, a kids’ menu, and menu specialties that range from a Veggie Burger to serious burgers, gluten-free pasta and much, much more. You can call 609-884-6332 for information and reservations, although reservations aren’t usually necessary, and you can check out the whole story at their website. (click here)

Note: Take the kids to “Breakfast with Santa” December 16th from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Bella Vida Garden Café…because life can be very beautiful especially when there’s such good food and fast, friendly service available!

The Artist’s Corner

Wanda Kline

Wanda Kline is not only an extraordinary artist, she is also an superb teacher of others, as well. She writes of herself,

"I grew up on the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey and have vivid memories of playing on the beach, pretending the jetties were ships and I was the captain. I was always fascinated by light and the bright colors of beach towels, umbrellas and chairs mingled with sand and surf. Those colorful memories continue to show up in my paintings even when I paint gardens, beds, boats, or landscapes. Often people tell me they would like to be in my paintings because of the feelings they evoke.

I am constantly experimenting, manipulating, and playing with color.  I want the viewer to feel that the painting is luscious; that he or she would like to walk into the painting and live there surrounded by color. By working in a series, I am able to attempt different ways of approaching the same subject.  So ultimately, though the subject of my paintings may change, it's always about the color."

At the Wanda Kline Studio in Ocean City, New Jersey an aspiring artist can take classes and workshops in oils, watercolors and drawing. Ms. Kline’s work may be seen at various galleries in Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City, Somers Point and Margate, New Jersey, and also in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her subjects range from still life to landscapes, portraits and more, and many are available as limited edition prints.

Kline is recognized as an excellent teacher of the Arts. She is soon starting a new program for young children and their loving adults called DRAWING EXPRESS. Look for brochures in libraries, preschools, home school offerings, and art centers in the next two months about this exciting new program or call 609-399-4482.

Wanda Kline's work has been selected for purchase by AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Campus through a rigorous proposal process. More than 100 artists submitted proposals.

For information on classes, galleries, limited edition prints and other information call 609-399-4482, or log onto the website at www.wandaklinestudio.com

For Your Information...

Ocean Grove, New Jersey

The boardwalk in Ocean Grove, New Jersey in Monmouth County is a simple wooden structure that allows you to see the beautiful beach and the community, but, unlike many beach areas in New Jersey, there are public bathrooms, public changing rooms, a public gazebo, free parking along the streets (no parking meters!), and beach chairs and umbrellas are available to rent in the summer season. You’ll still need beach tags, of course, but you’ll be enjoying a unique town that is roughly a square mile in area, and that was founded as a Methodist summer camp back in 1869.

Located between Asbury Park (to the north) and Bradley beach (to the south), Ocean Grove is still a dry town to this day, and although it declined somewhat over time, there has been a rebirth there in what has been described as the largest assemblage of Victorian architecture in the nation, so much so that Ocean Grove was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and to the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places in 1977.

One of the most remarkable structures is the Great Auditorium dating to 1893. It has been expanded over the decades to the size of a football field, and such notables as Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, Gypsy Smith and Norman Vincent Peale have spoken to packed houses there. Many Christian entertainers appear regularly at the Great Auditorium during the year.

On Saturday, December 16, 2006, go for a horse and carriage ride in Ocean Grove from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Main Avenue and Pilgrim Pathway, and enjoy the shops and restaurants after hours from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. As we said, Ocean Grove is dry, so B.Y.O.B. Remember, send us your favorite shore photo. We’d love to show it to everybody on the website.  When winter winds are howling it will be good therapy for all of us!

Now, don’t forget! Get those holiday cookie and other recipes to our Great Vacation blog. We’ll publish the best (it’s purely subjective on our part, of course) in the December 15th issue. Thanks again. “Must have cookie…NOW!”
