Edition 8, Volume 1
October 15, 2006
Today's Date:

Welcome to our Newsletter...

Where does the time go? We don’t know, but October is half gone already and the Great Vacation newsletter is here with another issue of fun and festive things to do “…down the shore!”  Check the town calendars for all the upcoming events. Don’t miss the Fabulous 50’s Weekend in Wildwood October 20 – 22nd, and Halloween festivities are going on almost everywhere at this month’s end.

The Rolling Stones take the stage October 27th at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall Arena, and Barbra Streisand will be there on November 4,   followed by The WHO on November 24. Check out our Atlantic City Scene for all the entertainers who are coming to AC now through November.

As usual, you’ll discover places to stay, places to dine, things to do and see throughout the southern New Jersey region.

You’ll find special features in this issue, such as the next in our series on New Jersey’s boardwalks (Seaside Heights). We’ve turned our attention northward as we walk “the boards.” The Artist’s Corner features a remarkable New Jersey native who was born in Orange, New Jersey, and whose work presents a wonderful vision of ordinary people captured in extraordinary ways. His name is Leonard Wilkinson, and he’s an artist you’re going to remember.

Our choice of attractions is also expanding. Check out the Atlantic City Aquarium, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum (also in Atlantic City), the Ocean City Arts Center (don’t miss their Juried Art Show in November), and the Jersey Seashore Children’s Museum at the Shore Mall. (hands-on fun for kids from 1-10).

Once again, we thank you for your feed-back and urge you to keep it coming. Log onto our blog and share your thoughts on the topics you’ll discover there, or simply drop us an email. Remember to share this newsletter with your friends, too. (Why should you be the only one to have fun? Share it with family and friends and they’ll probably tell you about their favorite places at the shore, too!)

The more you let us know, the better we can serve you! We sincerely hope the fall we’ll be great for you this year, and we’ll do our best to help you plan your weekends and leisure time. Remember, sometimes a Great Vacation can be a few hours long when it’s a day trip “…down the shore!”

Don’t forget our Blog. Check it out. Your opinion matters! Tell us what you think!

                                                           Sincerely,

Szechwan Garden

In 1981 a very special restaurant opened in Ocean City, New Jersey – Szechwan Garden – at 503 East 9th Street, and in the years since then this family owned and operated establishment has been helping to make people smile during lunch and dinner. The reason is quite simple – delicious food at reasonable prices.

Over the years local residents and visitors alike have been enjoying lunch and dinner at Szechwan Garden seven days a week. When you stop by and survey the menu, we’d like to make a recommendation. Based on reports from those who know, the menu is filled with delicious choices, but there is one in particular that should be sampled:
General Tso’s Chicken. Why? Well, let’s put is this way: Patrons rave about it. In fact, one customer who travels extensively all over the nation has stated unequivocally that Szechwan Garden’s preparation is the best he’s sampled anywhere. Period!

Szechwan Garden serves great tasting food because they begin with the best and most healthy ingredients available. From the vegetables to the meats, they make sure what is served to their customers is absolutely the best. It’s that commitment to quality and service that has resulted in Szechwan Garden being the stop so many make for lunch or dinner.

Oh, when they say they serve the best in ingredients, it’s also worth noting that there’s no monosodium glutamate (MSG) in their foods.  Reservations aren’t necessary. When you’re in Ocean City, New Jersey stop by Szechwan Garden and order General Tso’s Chicken, or one of their other delicious menu selections. Become part of the generations of folks who know why they go back again and again. It simply doesn’t get any better than Szechwan Garden. (click here)

The Artist’s Corner

Leonard R. Wilkinson

Leonard R. Wilkinson was born and grew up in Orange, New Jersey. Following graduation from East Orange High he served in the U.S. Air Force and then became a police officer in his hometown.  While working in law enforcement he began going to art school part time. However, when his talent became evident, one of his teachers urged him to become a full time student, and the world became a better place because of his decision.

Mr. Wilkinson began as an illustrator major at Parsons School of Design, and studied at the Art Students League and the Newark School of Industrial Design. He now lives in southern New Jersey and works in pen and ink, pastels, acrylics and watercolors. His work has been exhibited throughout northern and southern New Jersey, in Chicago, Illinois, at the Philadelphia Black Expo, the Atlantic City Arts Center and the Ocean City Arts Center. He has done one-man shows, as well as a number of commissioned murals in Brigantine and Atlantic City. The Atlantic City Medical Center purchased several of his works for their collection.

A portrait artist, Mr. Wilkinson painted the official portrait of the late Atlantic City Mayor James Usry which hangs in the day care center named in the Mayor’s honor.

He was also commissioned to create designs based on the history of the underground railroad celebrating Black History Month at Atlantic Cape Community College.

We reviewed the portraits in his galleries online, and using photographs supplied by families or individuals the artist creates extraordinary portraits of people – adults and children – that become family heirlooms for all time, priceless images captured in pen and ink, pastels, acrylics or watercolors.

For information about commissioned work, portraits, pricing and other details, telephone 609-641-6661, Email: Imwandishi@verizon.net

For Your Information...

Seaside Heights, New Jersey Boardwalk

In the early 1900s land development companies began promoting the Seaside Heights area on the Barnegat Peninsula as a resort and a great place to build summer homes for Philadelphia area residents. In those days a 40-foot beachfront lot could be had for just $100.00.

Along came 1913 and Seaside Heights was incorporated from sections of Berkeley and Dover Townships. The first toll bridge across Barnegat Bay was opened in 1915 linking Seaside Heights with Toms River and the mainland. Construction of the boardwalk began in 1917, and it took four years to build the first four blocks.

In 1950 the Thomas A. Mathis bridge was build replacing the narrow span, and today the mile-long, 17-block Seaside Heights boardwalk, which became the key to community development, is home to amusement piers, a water park, arcades, pizza shops and restaurants, cotton candy, shopping, and wheels of chance featuring prizes ranging from stuffed animals all the way up to TV’s, bicycles and scooters, attracting tens of thousands of summer visitors each week.

Seaside Heights offers its beaches, boardwalk, amusements, ocean and bay swimming, fishing, crabbing, boating and other water sports to people from all over, and it is known today as New Jersey’s “Family Fun and Sun Resort” for seasonal vacationers and day-trippers alike.

Thus, Seaside Heights, New Jersey becomes the next place to visit in our New Jersey coastal boardwalk series, and one more place to stroll the “boards” with family and friends. As they use to say on the Mission Impossible television series, “Your goal… if you choose to accept it…” is to walk all of New Jersey’s coastal boardwalks and promenades. It could take a lifetime (given all the shops, amusements and places to eat), but just think of the fun you’re going to have!

The Pier at Caesars

Their theme is “A World Apart Awaits,” and that’s the intention at the newly opened The Pier at Caesars, four floors of world-class shopping, dining and entertainment on The Pier opposite Caesars Casino, and connected to Caesars by a bridge running from the second floor to this new “world apart.”

The $175 million complex features some of the most fabulous names in retail shopping, including Gucci, Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton, Armani, A/X, Bebe and Burberry.  Not every store is opened just yet, but more are opening this fall, with still more incredible places coming in 2007.

As far as dining is concerned: nine extraordinary restaurants will tempt your palate at The Pier at Caesars, and they include Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr’s Buddakan and The Continental, as well as Phillips Seafood of Baltimore.

You’ll discover pulse-pounding dance floors, chic lounges and more entertainment than you can enjoy in one or two evenings, and the goal is to make you come back again and again to experience The Pier at Caesars. Note: Rumjungle is coming in 2007. Watch for it. For more on this brand new Atlantic City experience, go online to www.pieratcaesars.com The Pier at Caesars – it’s a world apart, designed specifically with you in mind.
