Edition 7, Volume 1
October 1, 2006
Today's Date:
Welcome to our Newsletter...

October…pumpkins, Halloween, costumes, autumn leaves, cooler days and colder nights, apple cider, harvest fairs, and Great Vacation newsletter with more things for you to see and do. October is that special time between the end of summer and the coming of Thanksgiving when the thoughts of the holidays really begin churning in our minds. It’s a time when we take a deep breath, put on the sweater or the fall jacket, and set out to discover what fun we can have today!

At our beaches the air temperature during the day is still ideal for strolling along the sands, although it might be a bit cool for a swimsuit. The water temperature becomes a bit “nippy” in October, although a wetsuit still allows surfers to have their fun. However, with all the things that go on, none of us lack for places to go and events to attend.

There’s still a lot of events “…down the shore…” and the places to stay, dine and visit are awaiting your arrival.

Check out our town calendars, attractions, lodging and dining guides, featured business, major Atlantic City concerts (The Stones and Sir Elton), Wildwood’s Fabulous 50’s event, craft fairs, and much more in this issue. In the Artist’s Corner discover the work of Erin Endicott (extraordinary), and realize that NOW is a great time to book your shore vacation for next year – if you haven’t already done so.

Thank you again for your input. Tell others about Great Vacation newsletter, or simply go ahead and email it to them. The more you tell us what you like (and don’t like) the better we’ll be at helping you, your family and friends find the best places to stay, dine, shop, play, and enjoy a great day trip, weekend getaway, vacation or season at the shore.

Contrary to what some may believe, fun doesn’t end when the winds are cooler – the fun goes on all year long. That’s why we’re here – to help you have a great time. After all, a "Great Vacation” can be had in just one day if that day is “perfect” for you and those you care about. As your interests expand, so does Great Vacation newsletter. Our coverage area is expanding, too. We can learn together in the coming weeks and months about so many Great Vacation “Things-to-Do!”

Don’t forget our Blog. Check it out. Your opinion matters! Tell us what you think!

                                                           Sincerely,

The Deauville Inn

President Teddy Roosevelt was there. So were Eddie Cantor, Jimmy Durante and Sophie Tucker, as well as many other stars and celebrities. Perhaps you’ve been there, too? If not, it’s time you took your family and friends to the Deauville Inn, located on the bay at the foot of Corson’s Inlet Bridge between Ocean City and Sea Isle City, New Jersey. (The official address is 201 Willard Road in Strathmere, New Jersey, 08248)

The Deauville Inn began life as the Whelan Hotel back in the late 1880’s, and during its colorful history it served as a speakeasy during Prohibition and a gambling casino in the 1920’s and 1930’s long before gambling came to Atlantic City. By 1980 when the Carpenter family purchased the property the Deauville Inn had fallen on hard times, so much so that people advised them to tear it down. However, the late Walter S. Carpenter had a dream – one of restoring the inn to its former glory. He and his family did just that, and today it’s the year-round location for great food, adult beverages and fun in the perfect setting.

Beginning in October (this month) the Deauville becomes headquarters for sports T.V. viewing. With 10 TVs (including High Definition TV) and all the sports services they subscribe to, it’s hard not to find the game or games you want to see playing at the Deauville Inn. Bring your friends. College…professional…the Deauville Inn is your favorite spot for fall, winter and early spring sports watching!

The Deauville Inn is open all year. From the week prior to Easter until September 30 opening time is 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sundays for lunch, followed by dinner and late night snacks.  From October through the week before Easter they’re closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays and open at noon Thursday through Monday for lunch and all that follows.

Dinner reservations are always suggested for the mid-spring and summer season through September, and especially for the weekends during the fall, winter and early spring. The number to call is 609-263-2080 to make your reservations. Don’t be disappointed. Call well in advance.

During the summer season weather (weather permitting) the Deauville Inn offers dockside dining and their Beach House is open Fridays at 4:00 p.m., Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. and Sundays at noon, where their motto is, “No Shirt? No Shoes? No Problem!” They supply the umbrellas – you supply the sunscreen.

The Deauville Inn also offers fantastic views of wildlife when you’re enjoying the warm breezes, and they’ve joined the Delaware Bayshore Birding and Wildlife Trails (BWT) Guide, presented by the New Jersey Audubon Society.

For more information about the Deauville Inn (click here). If you would like to be on their email list to receive information about the many events at the Deauville Inn throughout the year, send them your email address and request to mailinglist@deauvilleinn.com

The Artist’s Corner

Erin Endicott

“E” is for extraordinary. Double “E” is for Erin Endicott. In design, form may follow function, but in the incredible world of Erin Endicott, form and function meld together to create fantastic images that take your breath away. To view her art is to step into another place outside reality and to see literally from the “inside out” the mythical and the mundane married in images that startle, bemuse and enthrall the beholder.

Erin Endicott began taking watercolor lessons at the age of 6. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) in Textile Design from Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia.

Ms. Endicott  prefers working in “Mixed Media” (charcoal drawings, watercolor and water-based inks) and creates paintings that are coated in layers of beeswax and paraffin mixture. The result is a body of work best described as Expressionistic. Her work may be seen at the Projects Gallery in Philadelphia, The Art Shop at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, and at the Accent Gallery in Ocean City, New Jersey.

During this holiday season her work will be featured in a “gift” show at Accent Gallery.

For Your Information...

Cape May, New Jersey Boardwalk

Henry Hudson and his crew, sailing aboard the Half Moon on a trip financed by the Dutch East India Company, are recorded as the first European explorers to see the shore line in what would one day be called Cape May, although Hudson and his men did not set foot on the land at that time. The year was 1609.

It was the Dutch explorer Captain Cornelius Mei who led three ships around the Cape in 1623 and christened the area Cape Mei (anglicized to Cape May), but Mei and company also chose not to land.

Whalers coming down the coast from New England eventually began farming in the Cape May area to supplement their needs between whaling seasons, and it was these settlers who replaced the Kechemeches, a sub-tribe of the Lenni-Lenapes who fished and dug mollusks in the area until about 1735 when they disappeared from the Cape May area because of the influx of the Europeans.

In 1790 Philadelphia’s population numbered 42,000 people, making it the largest city in America. People began coming to the Cape May area seeking relief from the summer heat and humidity in the late 18th century.

Cape May was known as Cape Island during the 17th century, and it became the City of Cape May officially in 1869. In 1878 a disastrous fire destroyed many prominent hotels, and the rebuilding that followed was done in the Victorian style preserved to the present day, resulting in Cape May, New Jersey being designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, America’s Bicentennial Year.

The “boardwalk” along the beach fronting the ocean in Cape May, New Jersey isn’t made of “boards,” because it’s a raised paved promenade running for approximately 1.5 miles, offering great views for visitors along Beach Drive. There are shops, arcades, and places to eat on the ocean side of the promenade, but most of the walkway is devoted to an unobstructed view of the Atlantic in all the seasons of the year, and taking a stroll and stopping now and then to sit on a bench and watch the waves is a therapy that’s free but absolutely priceless.

While we’ve come to the end of the so-called “boardwalks” or “promenades” that traverse much of the southern New Jersey coast from Atlantic City southward, we haven’t come to the end of the boardwalks along the New Jersey seashore. There are others, and as our coverage area expands, the Great Vacation newsletter will be featuring future articles about other famous boardwalks, as well.

A fun goal for everyone would be to walk the length of all the boardwalks and promenades we’ve featured to this point. From north to south, they are: Atlantic City (approximately 5 miles); Ocean City (2.5 miles), Sea Isle Promenade (1.5 miles), the Wildwoods (a little over 2.5 miles – 38 city blocks), and Cape May’s Promenade (1.5 miles).

Added together, they equal about 13 miles, but we’ve got to warn you about one problem. You see, there are so many amusements piers, shops, places to eat, things to see and do – not to mention all those casinos in Atlantic City - well, it could take you a long, long time to walk the 13 miles. There are so many distractions along the way the trip could take months! Guess you should start early and allow plenty of time. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! Have a great time! Remember, walking is good for you - (as long as you don’t eat too much at all those places to eat!)

…and a Fabulous 50’s Time Will Be Had By All!

Mark your calendar for October 20 - 22nd, 2006 for the Third Annual Fabulous 50’s Weekend in the Wildwoods. This is one event you won’t want to miss.

The fun begins Friday night, October 20th with Jerry “The Geator with the Heater” Blavat’s Fabulous 50’s Record Hop in the Wildwoods Convention Center. Tickets are $10.00. Last year over 3,500 people partied with “The Geator”!

Saturday afternoon visit the 50’s Street fair with food and merchandise vendors, and enjoy the legendary Charlie Gracie, the Magnatones, World-class Elvis tribute artist Michael O’Connor, Love Affair, and the classic cars on display.

Saturday night it’s the Fabulous 50’s Rock and Roll Show in the Convention Center beginning at 7:00 p.m., and starring Philly’s own film-TV-stage  star James Darren, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, The Platters, Joey Dee and the Starlighters and the Shangri-La’s! Tickets are $40.00.

Wrapping it all up on Sunday, October 22 beginning at 1:00 p.m. in North Wildwood don’t miss Danny and the Juniors and the Dovells!

For information call 609-729-4000, or toll-free to 1-888-729-0033. The Fabulous 50’s Weekend is a collaborative project by the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce, the Wildwoods DooWop Preservation League, the Greater Wildwood Tourism Improvement and Development Authority, Coastal Broadcasting (98.7 FM The Coast and 94.3 FM), the Greater Wildwood Hotel and Motel Association and Main Street Wildwood.
